Train jumping through Europe..

•September 23, 2011 • 1 Comment

Yeah, don’t be surprised or anything, but after submitting my thesis I managed to stay in the good old home country for not more than 11 days.  I went abroad….. again, trying to see and travel the world, as glorious as that might seem. It was the first real summer holidays in 11 years.. where did all those summers go? I know I saw a lot of fish and seafood for six summers, a lot of burgers and fries for two summers and helping elders for five summers.. in other words – some summers I had two jobs. So, I felt that I deserved one summer of freedom and traveling before embracing the future as a 7am til 3pm worker status.

So; what was a better idea than travel all through Europe – to discover the beauty of our continent and to meet up with some of the greatest people I have ever gotten to know?! I started planning the trip in my thesis writing breaks – emailing people and ordering Interrail ticket and booking flights… and then June 15 came. I was at Sola Airport, Stavanger – freezing from the cold, even though wearing long pants and leather jacket. My first destination was Germany.

After a few hours transit in Copenhagen, I finally arrived at Düsseldorf International Airport. When I finally got out, I met a wall of heat – I felt the déjà vu from when I arrived in Indonesia – though that was about ten times worse. Well, that is how it is when you come from a country where brother Fall and Winter reign 80 % of the year. But it was just to let the Summer’s train hopping begin. About an hour later I arrived at Köln Hauptbahnhof, finally reunited once more with one of my best friends, Carolina. First three relaxing days in Köln, before taking on the adventure.

Here days were spent eating, shopping, drinking coffee, eating, drinking coffee, meeting up with local heroes – Sara and Sima, and not so local heroes – Mr. ATM (or should we call you Machete now?), Kiki and Rafa, drinking Kölsch and going to the “beach” for drinking coffee and Dixit with red wine. As you might figure from the above, we appreciate eating food and drinking coffee very very much :P Good that Köln has a lot of good places to offer.

Let’s study these few facts. We start with the coffee shop. I did unfortunately not get the name. Caro just told me that it was one of Sara’s favorite cafes. At the moment I entered, I noticed why. My comment “This place look like a temple” was followed by laughter, a phone call to Sara and even more laughter! Candles, exotic plants and a big BIG Buddha as the main center piece. Good coffee they had too!

Great food! Another side to Köln is the diversity of the food culture – on the corner you can buy a Döner or a Bratwurst – further down the street you can find an Indian restaurant, a Thai restaurant… or as we ended up, at a Lebanese/Arabic restaurant. Here we met up with Kiki, Rafa, Mr. ATM/Sanschete (aka Sascha Klapper – see photo for further information).

For the last day, we went to the beach – or what we would call an artificial creation along the Rhein; Sandburg Mühlheim! The perfect relaxing and chilling hangout place with friends. Having fun with photography, girls gossiping and coffee, it was an awesome place for us girls.
It was lovely day together with Kiki, Caro and Sara :) And it all ended with 3 cooks and 1 photographer making a mess in Sara’s kitchen, but some  great food came out of it though. And the introduction of the fascinating game of Dixit! The rules are simple: each player get 5 cards each, all with different pictures, the dealer pick one of his cards, and make a word/sentence association with it, and the other players have to find a card amongst their cards that fits this description the best. Afterwards it is all about guessing which card belonged to the dealer in order to prevent the dealer from getting points. In the end, the winner is the one with the most points when you are out of cards. This game really test your knowledge of other people’s way of thinking and your own imagination. It is all about saying the non-obvious. And the game went more like this “TIME!”, “The king ran away”, “Foot prints in the snow”, “TIME!”, “Hide-and-seek”, “TIME!”, “If Portugal falls, then Spain will follow”, “It used to be there, but now love is lost”, “TIME!” and the too obvious card “Monkey doing maths”….. followed by never-ending laughter! The madness our brains can create with just a few cards!

The next morning, my days in Germany was over, at least for a few more weeks. It was TIME to start the train jumping through Europe. First destination: Rotterdam, The Netherlands!

See ya!

Viva el Audleif – viva la España!

Okay, the first thing you might think from reading the title of the post is “What the fuck?”  Well, this blog post is dedicated to Audleif, also known as Torunn’s beloved(?) car. In the middle of the cold and snowy night of Sunday March 27, you took us all the way from Porsgrunn to Gardermoen, and even a little bit further than that, totally unexpected, since both me and Torunn are the best human GPS’s of the world. I blame the lack of sleep and two overenthusiastic, normally shower-singing Norwegians not paying attention to the road. Barcelona here we come! Even though estimating our time really good; missing the first parking bus, standing in line for luggage check-in forever and then the neverending security check, we made our way to the gate 10 minutes before boarding time! Falling asleep almost before fastening our seat belts, we were so excited to go to Barcelona to see our best friend Minna.

Three hours later we woke up to the flight attendants telling us to pull seats up, and prepare for landing. Woah, we were already flying over Spain; seeing the sea, beaches and palm trees on the ground beneath us.  We were finally there :) A short hour later we were in the city center of Barcelona, Place Catalunya, meeting Minna to guide us through what seemed like a unorganizaed mess; the Barcelona Metro. The three musketeers of Østerveien 64 was finally reunited for 5 days of awesomeness.

First on the program was check-in at Minna’s place, also referred to as Casa de Locas, before a guided tour with Minna through the streets of Barcelona. We tried to get in Museu Picasso, and failed: I have never ever in my life seen suuuuuuuuuuuuuch a long line to get into a museum! So instead we went for ice creams in the sun ( :) ) in Parc de la Ciutadella and a stroll along la playa de Barceloneta.

So came the next day, with ordering breakfast in a local Spanish café, without any knowledge of the Spanish language except for “Si” and “Gracias”. I’m impressed that both me and Torunn managed to order something that actually could be linked to breakfast – sandwiches! And no, they did not speak one word of English!  After several hours of shopping and checking the madness of el Loco de Gaudí, it was time to return to Casa de Locas. The rest of the night cannot be described better than the words of  Sak Noel:

When I came to Spain and I saw people party
I told to myself: What the f*ck!?
All day, all night
All day, all night
Viva la fiesta, viva la noche
Viva los DJ’s
I couldn’t believe what I was living
(Lyrics Sak Noel – Loca People)

The very next morning – rise and shine early!! Or not?  It was 1.38 pm. Time to go sightseeing? No, let’s sleep for a few more hours. Broken down, worn down. 4.16 pm, let’s move a bit. Breakfast was consumed at the kitchen table, quietly.  Finally starting to look alive. Put sunglasses on!
By 5.30 pm, we finally made it out of the house for the first time that day. Taking the Metro to Place Espanya, and then seeking to find out how to get to the top of Montjuïc. After a 20 minutes search, we found a bus. It was the wrong bus though. Instead of going to the top, it stopped at Parallell, less than halfway from our destination. At least we saw Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, Caixa Forum, the Olympic Needle and FC Barcelona stadium on the way up. And I will call it luck anyways, even if it was the wrong bus! There was no queue at the Teleféric de Montjuïc, which is the cable cart that can take us from Parallell to Castell de Montjuïc. Amazing view over the city. Recommended!

Whilest being in Barcelona we fell in love with el loco de Gaudí. Apparently, Barcelona loves their loco as much as we do, so they let him design a park; Parc Güell, and a cathedral: Sagrada Familia. The entire park was filled with the crazy creations of Gaudí. Wednesday was therefore dedicated to especially to Parc Güell, and to the Barcelona Fresh Food Market and shopping.

Well, when being in Barcelona, a trip to the beach could not be denied. The last day in Barcelona decided to bring us awesome weather; so the day was spent at la playa de Barceloneta with sun, sunglasses, sea and sangria. Tipsy before noon! And beers are the Irish pub in the evening. We arrived at the apartment just before 4.00 am. 3 hours till we had to leave . The adventure of Bjørnson and Puntis had to come to an end. However, it did not end in Barcelona, the home adventure was just about to begin.

Poor Audleif, had been waiting for us for five days, in the cold in a outdoor parking lot with no cars he knew from before. Poor fellah! It had even snowed a bit. No wonder he started harking and refusing to start when we finally found him. Having to revive him twice (!) and losing our parking ticket, it took us more than an hour to get out of the parking. But good ol’ Audleif got us all the way to Porsgrunn, despite two tired travelers that barely could keep their eyes open! Thanks for bringing us home :)

And Torunn, I look forward to our next adventure!

See ya!

Oslo Madness and Carnival Craziness in Cologne

•March 22, 2011 • 3 Comments

Finally my restlessness  could be put aside for one and a half week of travelling and visiting friends! It all started with some Oslo madness together with one of my best friends; the Troll! Some call her a chocolate fanatic. Others; the cookie monstah. I call her something as plain as Ingrid, because that is her name actually.

She was the last person I saw before leaving my beloved home country to go to Indonesia, and yet, 6 months later, a reunion could not be denied anymore. After a loooong bus ride, dragging my big ass suitcase through snow and water, I finally reached my destination – the world that St. Paddie would have loved, Kiwi Grønland, where everybody is dressed in green. After walking around the grocery store for about ten minutes, not finding what I was looking for, I decided to ask one of its green inhabitants. Shortly after, I heard running steps and another green inhabitant breaking around the corner and screaming – “TRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE!!! Weeeeeeee!! You’re early!” Well, considering I took the early bus in other to make it for the festivities of the evening in time, and spending six splendid hours in the bus – I would call it to be on time.

Two crazy x-inhabitants of Egersund reuniting in Oslo for some big city fun, well, this is a promising night. Well, let us keep it simple – first three people – one game – “Fuck the dealer” – two people of Egersund losing – one bottle of wine and unknown number of empty beer cans an hour later. Pretty much sets the standards for the rest of the evening. Hey whiskey, let me introduce you to my friend orange juice.

Good morning, headache, where did you come from?! ‘Cause I don’t know. “Hey blue bruises, how did I get these?” quote Ingrid. “By demonstrating how fast you could get from a standing position to the floor.” Stupidity. Laughter. And about time to look alive. Hangover sunglasses, where are they? So bright light outside! And crowded. Oslo is hosting the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011. Thanks Eldar Rønning and Martin Johnsrud Sundby for taking the silver and bronze medal today, and thank you Sweden for taking none. Yeah, when it comes to winter sports such as cross-country or biathlon, I am patriotic! But not as much as this dude:  http://ingridmj.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/dsc7284.jpg.

Or maybe I am, did not have a flag that day and could not buy one.. the money I had, I spent on a fishburger!! :D

This was the warm-up, time to move on – afraid of getting restless again. Hello, beautiful Germany and Cologne! Hallo meine Süsse, Carolina and Sara, I have missed you girls so much. The time up to the reunion took so long, but now I was finally there. First check-in, the couch of the Nodjavans’ residence. Did I know what I was in for?

No, but the reality was a sudden fact as the alarm rang the next morning at 8.30 am and we got dressed as fast as possible, given that three girls had to share one bathroom, and were supposed to meet the rest at 9.30 am. Did not happen though, but a Smurf, a hippie and Pocahontas was at the train at 9.43 am to meet with the Mexican and the Dutch Beer Garden girl. Let’s rewind for a second.

September 5, 2010, five Norwegians and three German students jammed into a surprisingly large Indonesian sightseeing bus, on the ultimate temple trip to see two of the World’s wonders: Borobodur and Prambanan. Easy talk and light singing from the Norwegians: “Ich bin Auslander, und sprechen nicht gut Deutsch” since neither of us could understand, nor hear the Indonesian pop music the radio was singing out. The least German of the three Germans, Carolina laughed, and said: “Hahahaha. You guys are funny! You should come to Cologne for Carnival, you would love it!”

And yet there I was, in the city centre of Cologne, dressed as a hippie, watching Carolina and Kenneth crossing the road, crowded of others, all dressed up as in the typical Kindergarten Carnival, with exception of toys, candies and soda. This was easily traded for Kölsch and perfect weather outside! And then the first day started with a 13,5 hours long beer marathon. My feet hurt the next morning, I could barely stand up. Another member was added to madness group – Hauptbahnhof/Kölner Dom at 4 pm, we picked up Thomas only wearing knickers and short socks in the freezing cold. A quick sightseeing trip through the main city and a beer run, and then it was to prepare for another night of craziness. This evening pirates, some nerds, Napoleon (convinced of the existence of cash machines when we all know that they are called ATMs or cash points) and a Mexican. Morning after even more tired, and another member to join on  the last night of craziness: Hello, Tita :)

Recipe for the perfect last night:

4 Sailors
1 Hippie monk with blond dreads
1 Norwegian Viking
1 Masked Indonesian
1 Ghost parade
Put all in a bowl and mix
Add two barrels of Kölsch and shake
Taste with numerous bottles of “Keiner Feigling”
And finish off with some burning fire

This recipe equals an entire afternoon/evening on the couch/bed! Caution: Only advised for those with a strong stomach!

About two weeks ago, still tired… Peace out, I need some rest!
